Ahmad Nizam Abbas - Of Counsel, K&L Gates Straits Law LLC

Ahmad Nizam Abbas was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in January 1994. He obtained a Master of Laws from the Singapore Management University in 2013.

He has acted for clients from diverse countries in their family disputes involving cross-border disputes on children and matrimonial assets. His probate experiences span various international jurisdictions. He is the current Chairman of the Muslim Law Practice Committee of the Law Society and deals with Family Law and Probate work in both the Civil Law and Syariah Law systems. He was a member of the Law Society’s team which participated in the Parliamentary Select Committee Hearing on the amendments to the Administration of Muslim Law Act back in 1997. In 2012, his paper on ‘The Islamic Legal System in Singapore’ was published in the Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal of the University of Washington and in 2018, he contributed an article ‘ Custody Issues- Differences and Similarities between Civil and Syariah Courts in Singapore’ in the Singapore Academy of Law Journal’s Special Issue on Children in Family Law : Changes and Challenges. His most recent article was on ‘Ahmad Ibrahim’s Role in Shaping Islamic Laws in Singapore- From Colonial to Post-Colonial’ in a commemorative book Beyond Bicentennial - Perspectives on Malays, published   in July 2020.           

He sits on both the Panel of Advisers of the Youth Court and the Vulnerable Adults Court at the Family Justice Courts as well as at the Maintenance of Parents’ Tribunal. He is an accredited Family Law mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre as well as a Child Representative at the Family Justice Court. He sits in several committees across various ministries, including the Public Guardian Advisory Committee.
